Open Call

Thank you for your submissions! The number of applications we have received for the TEKHNÉ residency Open Call has gone far beyond what we could have expected – we received over 200 proposals!

Due to the high level of interest, the selection process will take longer than we initially anticipated. Thanks for bearing with us! The results will be announced by the end of September 2025.

Once again, thank you – we’re happy that TEKHNÉ resonates with such a wide community of researchers and artists.

We invite researchers and artists working at the intersection of music, technology, and socio-political inquiry to apply for a three-week residency in Szczecin, Poland. This Open Call is part of TEKHNÉ – an interdisciplinary project exploring the relationships between sound, technology, power, and community.

The residency will be hosted by TRAFO Center for Contemporary Art in Szczecin, a contemporary art institution dedicated to supporting critical, cross-disciplinary practices.

This call is primarily intended for research-based projects, but we also welcome experimental, hybrid forms that bridge theory and practice.

🔧 What we offer:

  • A three-week stay in Szczecin in November 2025 or January 2026
  • Financial support that includes:
    • Travel costs (domestic/international)
    • Accommodation in Szczecin
    • Daily expenses (per diem)
  • Additional funds for short-term study trips (1–2 days) or archival research in other cities (e.g. Warsaw)
  • Access to TRAFO’s curatorial team and local cultural networks
  • A concluding public presentation (lecture, workshop, or concert) developed during the residency and presented at TRAFO

🔎 Who we are looking for:

We welcome applications from:

  • Researchers (independent or affiliated) in sound studies, ethnomusicology, cultural anthropology, media theory, political philosophy, or related disciplines
  • Artists whose work engages with research-oriented, socially engaged, or critical sound practices
  • Individuals or collectives exploring power, listening, infrastructure, memory, and resistance in relation to music and technology

Projects involving or inspired by the Central and Eastern European context are particularly welcome, though this is not a requirement.

🧭 Topics of interest may include (but are not limited to):

  • Sonic surveillance and sonic warfare
  • Music and sound as social or political infrastructure
  • Marginal sonic archives and forgotten voices
  • Listening as resistance
  • Post-industrial or post-digital soundscapes
  • DIY technology and counter-hegemonic media
  • Sonic ethnography and experimental methods
