TRAFO Center for Contemporary Art in Szczecin in collaboration with Galeria Kordegarda has the pleasure to invite you to the screening of a film featured in its opening exhibition Ryszard Waśko. Genesis. TRAFO would thus like to present its activities and mark its presence during Warsaw Gallery Weekend.

The video Portrait of the Artist as Rose Selavy (1997) is a part of Ryszard Waśko. Genesis exhibition presented on the occasion of TRAFO Center for Contemporary Art in Szczecin opening. The film refers to two famous performances by Marcel Duchamp: the female character Rose Selavy and his last public appearance at the museum in Pasadena in 1963. Ryszard Waśko shows off his acting skills while sitting at a table set in water on the shore of a lake. He is playing a game of chess with a naked woman. Every now and then, he gracefully glances at the camera. He plays with the situation, his own identity and references to the history of art. His performance does not remain in one dimension. At the same time, it raises questions about borrowings and quotes in contemporary art. An ironic self-distance is further emphasized by attributes characteristic of fluxus frequently appearing in Waśko’s works from the ‘90s.

exhibition until October 20, 2013

Rose Selavy is a part of a monographic exhibition of an international artist, visionary and curator Ryszard Waśko. It is the first such broad presentation of his art in Poland and abroad. Genesis is a heterogeneous overview of the artist’s works from 1972-2013. It covers a broad array of disciplines including photography, film, video, drawing, oil painting, installation, artistic actions and performance. Ryszard Waśko’s art forms and styles are hard to classify, and the themes touch upon various trends. He calls his art metaphoric conceptualism, a term that in his view best describes his work.
