Open Call: Synapses’ Glimmering. An Exhibition on Neurodiverse Ways of Experiencing the World

Who can apply?

We welcome applications from neuroatypical* artists, caregivers, and assistants supporting neuroatypical creatives, as well as collectives or artistic groups engaging with this theme. This open call is not intended for those looking to speak about neuroatypical experiences from an external or observational perspective. We envision the exhibition as a space focused on individuals with direct, lived neurodivergent experience.

How to apply?

  • Please send your application as a PDF to residency@trafo.art, with the subject line: Synapses’ Glimmering: Open Call.
  • Your application should include a description of the proposed work (max. 500 words), a short bio (max. 300 words) and a portfolio.
  • Deadline for submissions: October 26, 2025
  • Selected works will be chosen by the curator together with the TRAFO team.
  • We will notify selected applicants by October 31, 2025.

Terms of participation:

  • Selected artists will receive a fee and reimbursement of production costs up to the amount specified in the contract.
  • We cover the costs of transporting and insuring the works, as well as travel and accommodation for the artist during the opening.
  • We provide exhibition space, promotion, and technical support.

*The term *neuroatypical person encompasses anyone who identifies with the broadly understood spectrum of neurodivergence, whose ways of thinking, feeling, and experiencing the world transcend mainstream societal and cultural norms.

The Open Call is organized and financed by TRAFO Center for Contemporary Art in Szczecin.

The exhibition will be on view from March 5 until June 7, 2026 at TRAFO Center for Contemporary Art in Szczecin. It is presented within the framework of the project “Synapses’ Glimmering. An Exhibition on Neurodiverse Ways of Experiencing the World,” made possible with support from the nationwide Hestia Artistic Journey Grant Programme.

We seek to cultivate a space where artistic voices reveal a world transcending the normative–non-normative spectrum of neurological experience. We invite submissions in any medium (painting, sculpture, photography, video, sound, performance, and more) exploring the theme of neurodiversity.

About the project

“Synapses’ Glimmering” offers an affirmative exploration of neurodiversity, understood as the natural neurological variation within our species. Neurodiversity unveils the boundless complexity of how we process information, sense, communicate, and engage with the world. It challenges the normative orders that reduce different forms of perception and sensation to diagnoses or disorders.

What happens when we foreground the coexistence of different ways of sensing and thinking, rather than reducing them to their essentialization? What becomes possible when we no longer measure by productivity and functionality? What forms can life and artistic expression take outside the language of disorder and deficit?

Art is a space of refuge, a source of strength to question normative orders. It can open new paths of coexistence, point toward alternative directions for expression, relationships, and creativity – in admiration of neurodivergent experiences, and in reflection on pathologizing and medicalizing frameworks.

Through this project, we will examine how neuronorms affect creative spaces; we will discover practices that open possibilities beyond binary frameworks; we will get to know neuroatypical creative processes and artistic practices.
