TRAFO Education would like to introduce you to an artistic technique that is closely associated with abstract expressionism.
ACTION PAINTING – sometimes called gestural abstraction – is a style of painting based on the use of spontaneous, unrestricted act of creation by pouring, dribbling and splashing paint over the canvas. The resulting work emphasizes the physical act of painting itself as an essential aspect of the finished work. Works created using such technique are dynamic, full of expression, lively colors, random forms and textures.
The major figure representing the movement was the American painter Jackson Pollock. He used the so-called “drip technique”. He punched holes in paint cans from which he splashed various colors of paint onto the canvases. The artist thus expressed himself and his emotions.
One of the creative acts of Pollock is featured in the video below.
We encourage you to try the technique. If you do not have a canvas, a piece of paper, cardboard or other surface will do. You can use not only punched containers, but many other everyday objects. You can splash paint with a brush, throw a ball dipped in paint, blow colorful paint stains with straws, add paint to soap bubble solution (watercolors work best) or shoot it from water guns.
We hope you will have lots of fun!
